A great many of those invited attended during the afternoon with the earliest arriving before 1.00pm and the last leaving around 9.30pm. The afternoon gave a taster of the superb range of furniture and technology now available to enhance any home or business. The feedback received during, and since, the event has been tremendous.

Appointments are already being arranged to enable  one-to-one time with clients to discuss their individual requirements. Exciting developments hit the press

An exciting new design hub bringing together smart home technology with the best interior furnishing is to be launched in Windermere.
The new centre at Special Spaces will be a showcase for top craftsmen and designers, with state of the art home cinema, audio and lighting set into custom built furniture in an ideal-home setting.

The project marks the start of a partnership between two dynamic young companies, home technology specialists Epixx, and craft furniture creators Lakeland Fells Furniture.

They will be joined by award-winning interior designer Alison Tordoff whose Fidget Design furnishings and décor will set off the installations, and glass artist Jo Vincent who has created a stunning glass kitchen splashback.

A showroom dedicated to kitchen design and individually-made fitted furniture has been extended to create a labyrinth of smart-home rooms.

On one wall, a 10feet wide home cinema has been created in a lounge filled with craftsman-built furniture. There’s a built-in cocktail cabinet and a hidden door in a bookcase that takes visitors through to a mini conference centre. A fold-down bed set into a wall demonstrates how space can be used, while the sofas are filled with cushions from Alison’s Love District range – a tribute to the local Lake District landscape.

Alison has designed the interior spaces, and a local company, Wools of Cumbria, has provided carpeting made from the fleece of Herdwick sheep.

The partnership was sealed between Andrew Smith, who has been running the Special Spaces showroom and is also hands-on managing director of Lakeland Fells Furniture, and Matt Holmes and Ben Tomlinson of Epixx.

Matt and Ben, who say they “live and breathe technology”, needed a location and the furniture to set off their smart home creations. Andrew’s Special Spaces showroom and hand-crafted furniture – which includes design and manufacturing projects for Windermere Marina Village, the  Tower Wood Outdoor Education Centre, and the award-winning Cedar Manor Hotel and Restaurant – proved to be the perfect solution.

Together with Alison and Jo, they embody the mantra of the late Steve Jobs, the pioneer of the personal computer revolution, that “design is not just what it looks and feels like; design is how it works”.

Andrew Smith, whose Lakeland Fells Furniture innovation in design and expertise in production has been providing furniture solutions to domestic and commercial clients for 10 years, set up his business in 2004 to harness the skills of locally trained craftsmen following recognition of increasing demand within the hospitality, commercial and high end domestic sector for the design and creation of bespoke, hand-made quality furniture.

Research by Cumbria Tourism had highlighted the need for the hospitality sector to materially upgrade the quality of accommodation provision available in the Lake District to ensure that customer expectation of a world class visitor destination was not compromised.

The demand created for bespoke furniture also highlighted an associated requirement for specialist joinery skills for finishing off installation projects such as bespoke skirting boards, dado and picture rails, architectural mouldings, panelling, hardwood doors and windows.

Four years ago, an extra dimension, Special Spaces, was established to supply and install fitted furniture including fitted kitchens, bedrooms, commercial offices and home studies.

Epixx, based in the North West at Bolton le Sands near Carnforth, are independent consultants and designers specialsing in home cinema, HDTV, lighting, music and home security.

“It’s an ideal partnership,” said Andrew Smith. “Their equipment fits into our specially designed furniture. They are bringing smart technology to the smart homes that we are furnishing.”

Said Matt Holmes: “We have designed one interface that’s powerful enough to control everything in a home, and all our systems are designed to be easy to use. Now we have an ideal location where we can demonstrate just how smart and user-friendly it can be.”

As our showroom extension continues to move towards completion we are finding out more about the smart technology that can add new dimensions to those special spaces in your home, business or both.

Alongside demonstrating creative design solutions to enhance living, sleeping and work space we will soon be able to demonstrate some of the amazing technology available to provide CCTV coverage, deter intruders or detect smoke or hazardous gasses to keep those special spaces, and those that live, sleep and work in them, safe from harm. MIx in the ability to control such systems from your mobile phone and we really will be able to demonstrate recipes for smarter home technology at its best.

Finally with the furniture concepts on display within our new home cinema and meeting/listening room settings, together with the finishing touches being provided across the showroom by our other creative associates at Fidget Design, Jo Vincent Glass, Wools of Cumbria Carpets and The Love District  we are certain that our showroom will whet your lifestyle appetite.

Imperial kitchen shapes up

26/6/2015

A very busy week for our team installing a new Crown Imperial kitchen. Following complete removal of old kitchen units, a separate utility area was created and, following plastering, the new kitchen and separate utility area were fitted with LED ceiling illumination, re-plumbed, rewired and the new full height and base cabinets installed.

The design incorporates a bank of eye level Neff appliances, including two hideaway door ovens , warming drawer and microwave. A Neff 4 burner glass gas hob and extractor complete the cooking essentials and an attractive Franke sink unit adds further quality to the installation.

With integral white goods the finished result is stunning.

Using local trades and our in house installation team the project has been turned around within 5 days with a fully operational kitchen in use for the weekend with just a bit of final fixing to undertake next week, together with floor covering.
